brilliant essay and brilliant movie!! since you mentioned gullah culture in charleston i was wondering if you’ve seen “daughters of the dust”? totally different vibe from sinners but a beautiful movie that explores conjure and a similar era of southern history!!
this is up next on my list, especially since it’s always mentioned with eve’s bayou. i really can’t wait to check it out, especially since i’ve always heard great things about the director julie dash
as someone also from charleston love seeing your articulation of this movie's faithfulness. I keep telling anyone who'll listen how refreshing it is to see a film live up to a representation of the south and what southern gothic was intended for when we're so used to them taking a surface level approach. I also loved slim SO much because of how familiar he felt.
Loved this
that really means so much; thank youuu 🥰⭐️
Annie is such an incredible character and I love what you have to say here!
